Beyond Relativism:Tan Sitong”s Criticism of Confucian Ethics
Feng Youlan in his paper On Tan Sitong published in 1961 examined Tan Sitong”s philosophical thought,including Tan”s view of natural world,dialectical ideas,epistemology,and the view of social history.In that paper and his A History of Chinese Philosophy,Feng did not pay much attention to Tan”s ethical ideas,instead,he paid more attention to Tan”s philosophy.Feng asserted that Tan Sitong”s methodology is relativism and Tan has some primary knowledge of dialectics,which comes from his own guess and was spontaneous.” Basically,the thought in this aspect are relativist,but not dialectics yet.”
