@@ Systematic ReviewsIn the 21st century, with increasing public accountability and pressure on health care resources worldwide, health care professionals and decision-makers need to be able to produce and describe the evidence on which their decisions are based. This evidencebased decision making requires a systematic appraisal of the best evidence available. However, each year vast quantities of research on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of health disorders are published all over the world. It is therefore impossible for an individual to keep abreast of all the primary publications in his or her own field (for example,there is an estimated 431 919 articles on otolaryngological diseases entered on MEDLINE alone”1” ), and these constitute only a fraction of the two million articles published in the biomedical literature each year.
