Chemical ecology-driven discovery of bioactive marine natural products as potential drug leads
Marine living circumstance is one of the most complex biospheres on Earth due to its huge ranges of light,temperat-ure,pressure,and nutrient conditions,etc.Such involuted ecosystem breeds colorful lives to produce extremely diverse and complex functional secondary metabolites,which differed from those in terrestrial environment”1-2”Over the past decades,more and more bioactive marine natural products(MNPs)have attracted numerous chemists and phar-macologists for their medicinal application.Thus,although MNPs have only been studied for approximately half a cen-tury,they have already shown great potential in new drug dis-covery.Up until now,nearly twenty MNP-derived drugs have been successfully developed and are available on market,such as the earliest marine sponge derived antivirus drug cytarabine,the mollusk derived ziconotide for the treatment of neuropathic pain,the famous sponges derived anti-cancer drugs trabectedin and eribulin,and the newly CFDA-ap-proved algae derived anti-Alzheimer drug GV-971,etc”1-3”.
