The 35 years followed up study of 72 patients with transient ischemic attacks
Objective Seventy-two TIA patients were followed up for 35 years. The recurrence of TIA, thc ocurrence of complete stroke and myocardial infarction, the fatality rate and the causes of death, the survival rate in every year and its 95% confidence interval, and limitation of neurovascular surgical indication were observed. Methods We followed up 72 patients with TIA for 35 years and analyzed those conditions mentioned above with the methods ofcochort study, life table and other medical epidemiological statistics. Results The recurrent rate of TIA was 27.9%, the occurrence rate of complete stroke 65.7%, that of myocardial infarction 8.4%. The fatality rate was 72.7%. The main cause of death was complete stroke, accounting for 59.6%. The first cause of death in non-elderly patients was cerebral hemorrhage and in the elderly patiems was cerebral infarction. There were two patients with fatal myocardial infarction, accounting for 2. 8% The survival rate of 29 years was 24.5% and its 95% confidence interval was 5.0-44.0%. The 19 cases had the indication of neurovascular surgical operation, accounting for 26.6%. Conclusion In the long term followed-up study the prognosis of patients with TIA was better than that of those witt cerebral infarction. About one thud of patients had the recurrence of TIA. The occurrence rate of complete stroke was obviously higher than that of myocardial infarction. Estimably, the effect on preventing the occurrence of complete stroke in patients with TIA by neurovascular surgical operation was limited
