Introduction to the Special Issue of π-Functional Molecules & Polymers
π-Functional materials refer to small molecules and polymers that contain conjugated structures and exhibit interesting electronic and optical properties and may have potential applications.Early applications π-conjugated organic systems can be dated back to eighteen century when organic molecules containing aromatic unites were used as dyes and pigments. The discovery of conducting conjugated polymers by Heeger,Shirakawa and MacDiarmid in the 1970s triggered a big boom of research interests in π-functional molecules & polymers.Since then, more and more π-functional molecules & polymers have been prepared, which show a diversity of attractive electronic, optical, magnetic, and photophysical properties, and many of these materials have found applications in a variety of fields, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs),organic field-effect transistors (OFETs),organic photovoltaics (OPVs),chemical sensors and so on.
