Multifunctional high-fluorine-content molecule with high dipole moment as electrolyte additive for high performance lithium metal batteries
Lithium metal batteries(LMBs)have been regarded as the most promising technology beyond lithium-ion batteries to meet the ever-increasing demand for high-energy and high-power secondary battery technologies.Challenges such as poor electrochemical stability of electrolytes, dendritic Li plating, gradual cathode structure degradation, and the resultant low Coulombic efficiency and short cycling life, however, have plagued the extended commercialization of LMBs.Here,a high-fluorine content and high dipole moment molecule, bisfluoroacetamide(BFA),was designed by Ma and his co-workers as an electrolyte additive for LMBs.This molecule could modify the sol-vation structure of Li ions and form a gradient solid elec-trolyte interphase on the anode side with tailored Li+adsorption and diffusion, and cathode electrolyte inter-phase layer before the decomposition of other carbonate solvents, enabling dendrite-free Li anodes and LMBs with long cycling life and excellent rate performance. This work explores a new approach to multifunctional electrolyte additive development and can also be adapted to other metal battery chemistries.
