cGASing mitochondria to fend off ferroptosis

Induction of ferroptosis,a form of non-apoptotic cell death caused by phospholipid peroxidation and consequent plasma membrane rupture,has been explored as a potential strategy for cancer therapy.In a recent paper published in Cell Research,Qiu et al.report that promoting mitochondria-associated cGAS(cyclic GMP-AMP synthase)signal can block ferroptosis to support cancer progression independently of downstream activation of signaling adapter STING(stimulator of interferon genes).
