Diabetes is characterised by chronic hyperglycaemia and long-term exposure to elevated glucose levels accelerates the progression of macro- and micro vascular diseases leading to the well-known long-term complications retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, and cardiac diseases.Due to changes in life-style-we eat more and different, we exercise less there is an unbalance in energy intake and use, initially leading to overweight, later frequently followed by diabetes type 2.Diabetes has become a real global epidemic.
