A text is a continuous piece of spoken or written language.It normally consists of a number of linked sentences,and has a distinctive internal structure and an identifiable communicative function.On the basis of their structure and function,texts are classified into text types or genres.The text that you are reading now belongs to the text type "encyclopedia entry".It shares with other texts of that type a structure that goes from the general to the specific,or from definition to examples.There is often cross reference to other entries.
