[paradigm]
A paradigm is a way of displaying the different forms of a word in the form of a list or table. For example, the words am,are,is,etc are said to have a paradigmatic relation with one another. This means that they fill the same "slot" in a sentence, and only one of them may be present at any time in a given slot.Vertical slots contrast with horizontal "chains".Chains are elements in sequence, such as I + am,or I + was.The relationship between elements in a chain is called a syntagmatic relationship.
