[morpheme]
A morpheme is the smallest meaningful unit in a language. The word meaningful, for example, consists of three morphemes:mean, ing, and ful.None of these can be broken down further to form meaningful grammatical units, and all of them can be used as the building blocks for other words, such as means, speaking, and beautiful.Note that, while mean can stand on its own (it is a free morpheme),ing and ful cannot. They are bound morphemes, and must combine with free morphemes to form complete words.Bound morphemes are mainly affixes. The description of the way morphemes combine is called morphology.
