Old Dogs,New Tricks
"You can't teach an old dog new tricks",or so I've heard.I've never had a dog,old or otherwise, and I've certainly never attempted to teach a dog tricks-but I have, with varying degrees of success, tried to teach EFL to quite a lot of adult learners. In our professional context Ⅰ think most of us have heard teachers, parents,or even students themselves claim that the older you get,the more difficult language learning becomes. So widespread,in fact,is the belief that an early start means more effective learning, that it has formed the basis of a shift in the language education policies of a long list of countries over the last twenty years, with many governments now encouraging primary language lessons for children as young as four and five years old.
