[intelligibility]
If you are intelligible, other people can understand what you are saying. In the teaching of pronunciation,it is generally accepted that intelligibility should be the standard to aim for. This is partly realistic:few adult learners of a second language will achieve native-like pronunciation in that language. One of the factors that affect intelligibility is the speaker's accent. The accent is formed by the way the speaker pronounces individual sounds (or phonemes),and the way these are combined in order to produce connected speech.
