Testing speaking: narrow views and wide horizons
@@ The most fundamental requirement attaching to any test,be it of language or anything else,is that it should be valid-that is,we should first have de fined clearly and unambiguously what it is we wish to test, and then produced an assessment instrument which addresses precisely this construct.Having both worked as an oral examiner myself and trained other oral examiners over a period of many years,I have repeatedly been struck by the fact that it is probably for tests of speaking, more than for any other kind of language test, that we are still seeking satisfactory answers to the very basic questions”What are we testing?”and”What should we be fo cusing on in our assessment?”
