Roles of the Hedgehog Signaling Pathway in Cutaneous Physiology and Oncology
IntroductionThe role of the hedgehog signaling pathway (HSP),which is involved in both physiological and pathological processes, has gained interests in the field of dermatology.1 Recently, increasing evidence has revealed the role of the HSP in several cutaneous tumors as well as in some hematological disorders.Aberrant activation of the HSP contributes to malignant processes in these tumors, such as pathogenesis, malignant invasion,metastasis,drug-resistance,cancer-ization,and cancer stem cell maintenance.Because the HSP may serve as a crucial component of tumorigenesis,we discuss the influences exerted by the HSP in cutaneous physiology and oncology in this article.
